In this blog, I will take an opportunity to talk about the IELTS Writing TASK 1
IELTS academic writing is a hard nut to crack. If you aim for a band 6.5 only, you can read this, as getting a band 6.5 in writing is not a herculean task. However, aiming for a band 7 or above can be cumbersome.
Task one in the IELTS test will contribute to your 40 percent of the marks in the writing task. You will be given a time limit of 20 minutes to complete this. The word count is 150.
What makes this task more complex is the vocabulary that goes with it. Let us understand this with an easy example. If you are explaining a line graph, the words that you might use to show increasing trends are resurgence (rising or a hike), or if the line graph is sloping downwards, the word will be receding. Similarly, words that can depict a trend are plunge, skyrocketing, gradually sloping, slanting, etc.
In the case of a pie chart, the words that one should make use of or to boost the scores are half or quarter, one-third, or two-thirds.
If we have to describe a process diagram, it will have terms like the first step, the second, or the final stage. You cannot think of getting a band 7 or above without the active use of this academic jargon. Memorising these complex words can be sometimes frustrating.
